I love to ask questions. I think that good questions have the power to make you think in ways that you have never thought before. The right questions will challenge your status quo and play a significant role in whether or not you will experience success in achieving your goals.
Asking the right questions will help you think through what needs to happen in order for lasting change to occur. This will ultimately lead to your success in reaching your goals. Here are 4 questions I believe you must ask when setting any goal.
1. Are you ready?
I love this question because many of us think we are ready to make significant changes in our lives, but we really are not.
> Are you ready to do what it takes to change?
> Are you ready to change your habits?
> Are you ready to put in the work?
> Are you ready to give up those friends?
> Are you ready to stop making excuses?
> Are you completely disgusted?
Dr. Henry Cloud said, “People change when the pain of staying the same exceeds the pain of change.” Are you really ready to pay the price to reach your goal?
2. Where are you?
Terry Pratchett said, “…If you don’t know where you are, then you don’t know where you’re going.” We must be honest with where we are physically, financially, spiritually, and relationally so that we can fully understand where we want to go.
3. What stopped you last year?
We all have a past…and the most successful people are learning from it. Henry Ford once said, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”
In his book Your Best Year Ever, Michael Hyatt talks about the need to get rid of limiting beliefs. He says, “A limiting belief is a misunderstanding of the present that shortchanges our future.” He goes on to state that we need to replace those limiting truths with liberating truths. If we want to have success with any goals, we must look back at what has stopped us before in achieving this goal.
4. Who is going to help me?
You need help. No one gets to where they are going by themselves. I would suggest you talk to successful people in the area you are wanting to reach your goals. Talk to people who regularly are making significant changes or hitting goals. I guarantee that they will tell you that they had help in the way of accountability or coaching. They didn’t do it alone.
The men with whom I provide coaching have reached out to me because they realize the power of having someone help to attain their goals. Who is going to help you?
Questions are powerful. There is learning in questions… so ask them!
